This Optex detector can be positioned both indoors and outdoors, but we would certainly recommend it for outdoors.
Detection takes place in a circumference of 180 degrees over a distance of up to 12 metres. This makes it possible to secure an area of 24 meters wide. (12 metres left and 12 metres right)
Variable mounting height
The WXS-RDAM-X5 detector can be set to work at different mounting heights.
In the low mounting position you need to mount the detector at a height of preferably exactly 1 meter high. Detection takes place in a circumference of 180 degrees over a distance of up to 12 metres. This makes it possible to secure an area 24 metres wide. (12 meters left and 12 meters right)
In the high mounting position you need to mount the detector at a height of preferably exactly 2 meters high. Detection takes place in a circumference of 180 degrees over a distance of 9 metres. This makes it possible to secure an area of 18 metres wide. (9 meters left and 9 meters right)
Via the internal settings of the detector itself you indicate at which height the detector is mounted. There are also settings to set the sensitivity of the motion detection on each side, and the distance that each side has to look at to detect movement.
What do the letters RDAM stand for?
The letters AM in RDAM stand for Anti-Mask, which means that you will get a message if someone deliberately blocks the view of the detector to not be seen. Something that can happen if it is placed outdoors.
The R in RDAM indicates that it is the battery version. Optex also makes wired versions for other systems.
The D in RDAM indicates that it is a detector with a built-in radar module.
Advantages of Radar
It checks by means of a radar beam (Microwave) whether the movement detected by a heat difference meets the requirement to generate an alarm. This is done as an extra check that the movement detected by the PIR detector (Passive InfraRed) is actually caused by a human being. After all, dogs, cats or moving trees do not need to be detected, but we like to be informed of people who have nothing to do with them, and welcome them with an alarm siren.
So the radar sensor and the heat sensor compare their observations to really exclude any possible false alarm. The combination of these two sensors in one detector offers the highest reliability, and is also present in the AJAX MotionProtect Plus for indoor use. We would recommend this Optex WXS-RDAM-X5 especially for outdoor use.
Its extensive hardware makes it ideally suited to cope with all the “inconveniences” that can arise outdoors. Think of animals such as cats walking around and rapidly changing weather conditions such as rain or bright sunshine. Only when a detector can cope with this, and only reacts when people are detected, a detector is suitable for use outside the house. The Optex WXI and WXS series of detectors are both specially designed for outdoor use.
If it is desired that one side detects less far, this can be set independently. So it is possible to have 90 degrees of the detector monitor only 6 meters for movement, and the other angle 12 meters. It is also possible to reduce the angle at which the detector looks, but this is not often done if one chooses this detector.
There are cheaper outdoor detectors available with a standard smaller detection angle of 90 degrees, such as the AJAX MotionProtect Outdoor.
